Street kids

„Birashoboka“ is Kurundi (the national language in Burundi) and means „Everything is possible“. This centre for street kids in the capital Bujumbura now houses 140 boys aged between six and 18. These boys have never been able to attend school before. When we began providing assistance in 2005, approximately 80 boys lived there. Many of them came to the centre directly from the street, while others had fled from lives as child soldiers. Students can catch up on the first two years of school at the centre and then attend a government school. They can also learn traditional Burundian drumming, which gives them back a bit of the pride and dignity lost over the years. The drumming (as well as football, basketball, gymnastics and traditional dance) also helps them to come to terms with their past and process their horrific experiences.

burundikids e.V. supports this project by paying the rent, paying for food and for the nurse Celestine. Half of the expenses bears the Aktion Tagwerk e.V.
